About Me

Allegheny Health Network is pleased to welcome Marco A. Alcala, Jr., MD. Dr. Alcala specializes in family medicine, non-surgical orthopaedics, sports medicine and concussion management. He has clinical experience in performing ultrasound guided injections and diagnostics as well as stem cell procedures. He provides exceptional sports medicine care for patients aged five years and older, and comprehensive and compassionate primary medical care for patients aged 18 years and older. He is also certified to perform Department of Transportation physicals. He is the team physician for Avonworth and Moon high schools and team physician for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Dr. Alcala joins the physicians of Allegheny Health Network Orthopaedic Institute.

Dr. Alcala received his medical degree from Saint George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada. He completed his general surgical internship in Livingston, N.J., at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and second year of general surgical residency in Morristown, N.J., at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He underwent three years of a National Institute of Health research fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute in Pittsburgh, Pa. He went on to complete his family medicine residency at the Beaver Medical Center, part of the Heritage Valley Health System in Beaver, Pa. He then completed his fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa., where he trained as a team physician for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Dr. Alcala was also one of the team physicians for the Robert Morris University men’s hockey team and Moon High School sports teams. He also served as a team physician for the River Hounds Soccer and Harlequins Rugby teams and is currently involved in professional boxing as a cut man.

He is a published author of several articles, presented multiple abstracts for research, and has given oral presentations on a variety of topics to medical audiences around the country. Dr. Alcala has received an award as a minority scholar in the field of cancer research. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine, the USA Boxing Association, the American Association of Family Physicians, and the American Board of Family Medicine.


Dr. Alcala has medical staff privileges at Allegheny General Hospital.
